Good paying product company or onsite opportunity? Please advice

Dear friends,

I am 4.3 years experienced. Currently working in a good paying & leading product company in network product development domain. The work and environment is good in this company. What has been nagging my mind is the total lack of onsite opportunities in this company. Going for an onsite opportunity has always been my dream(literally as well. Has dreamt being in a foreign coutry few times in sleep :P). Now, the desire for onsite has transformed into yearning and a fever. The fever increases whenever i see my FB page flooded with photos from my friends in USA, UK, france and australia.

I am now desperate to go to onsite for the following reasons:
1. Hope for saving a lot so that i could smoothly settle in life.
2. I like to visit places in foreign countries as a tourist.

To have my onsite thirst fulfilled, now a days i have been thinking of joining a services company in my domain. But, i am not sure how far is that advisable. My current package is 10L pa. If I join a services company and go onsite through that, will i be able to earn considerably more comparing my current salary? Is my decision advisable one? please share your opinions, friends.

Thanks.

I have been with service as well as product. and i like the taste of product. and why do you want to leave this? why can't you ask your boss for an onsite at least for short time? your company dont have branches in other country?

It is very difficult to advise you, since we don’t know you and don’t know what you would be happiest doing.

Thanks for the reply Seetharaman!

I too like the taste of the products company. I worked for a services company for 2 years and then switched here. My current company doesnt sent people more than 3 months . But, I want to make enough money so that I could settle in my life quickly(house, commitments, etc). Once I made enough money(probably in 4-5 years in onsite), I am thinking to return the same company I currently working on. Moreover, I like to visit places in other countries as an excited tourist . Does my thoughts have any flaws? will i be able to save considerably enough when compared to my current package?

Thanks.

Contract work?
An old friend of mine works on contracts, which means he can work for four months and earn the same as somebody with permanent employment would earn in a year. You are trading security for a much higher salary. I do not know whether that would suit you at all.

My few points.

As far as visiting countries, yes. You can visit countries on an onsite assignment. Services company is good for short term onsite opportunities.

For savings, trust me, you cannot save "a lot". If you travel onsite for short term you will not get full salary and you will be pretty tight on expenses and
at best you can bring few thousands to home. Not even a lakh (1 lakh = 100,000 INR).

Don't be under impression that whoever travelling are bringing home tonnes of money, its not true at all. Life is not as glamorous as it looks in facebook photos.

See the real picture and see for any short term opportunites. Companies are now a days trying to cut costs of travel and relying on video conferencing etc.

Good luck!

Sai Surya, Thanks a lot for your reply. This helps me.
One suggestion needed: What about long term onsite if a services company offers me(2-3 years)? is it worth taking that?
