Strange submit on a JSP page

I have images with onclick that call a function toggle node with an integer value that identifies the particular image. The function sets the value in a hidden box and submits the form. The problem is that when I click on an image the toggle function is not being called (an alert in the function is not displayed). However, the form is submitted and the struts form object receives the value of the hidden box which is the default value. I tried to include the HTML text replacing the angle brackets with the suggested strings but still got an error on the post.

Your help will be greatly appreciated,
Alejandro Barrero

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
