Would someone give a good definition of concurrence with regard to programming? I have been unable to find one on the web.

You might try looking for concurrency.

I don't know what the formal definition is, but basically it means multiple tasks executing at the same time--or at least having the ability and possibly the appearance of executing at the same time--instead of having to execute sequentially.
