Why does it need to be deleted? You want to delete thanking someone?

By this time it will be pointless trying to remove the post because it will already have been recorded in internet archiving sites. Why do you want to change it? Have you posted confidential material?

I locked the duplicate topic....

http://www.coderanch.com/t/583072/Ranch-Office/could-edit-or-delete-ve

But to summarized the other topic (and even repeat the sentiment here).... just ask a moderator with details on what you want to edit and why. In general, we don't delete posts that have responses, and only edit topics if there are proprietary information (such as intellectual property or passwords).

I don't think that's true - not entirely, anyway. It's true that a determined investigator can recover such data with relative ease. But deleting or editing the main public version of page can substantially reduce the chance of anyone will even notice whatever it is that the poster is trying to clean up. Sure, posters should know that they can never clean up a post 100%, but in some cases it's not unreasonable to at least try to minimize the damage by simply cleaning the main post.

This basically says to me "I need it deleted because I want it deleted".

That's not a reason.

What I see in that thread is you asking a question. Martin spent some of his very valuable time to help you. You got what you wanted, and now you want us to delete the thread, basically saying that you feel that Martin's time was worthless - i.e. it can just be thrown away.

We feel that EVERYONE'S time is valuable. Leaving that thread up will let Martin's reply help others, thus paying dividends. He helped you, but in a year or two there may be 12 other folks who come and read your thread, and get help.

We think that is pretty cool. We don't want to devalue Martin and make him feel like his time spent helping others is wasted.

So...If you have some REAL reason that this needs to be deleted, let any moderator know. You can send them a private message if you prefer. But so far, you haven't provided us with any reason to do so, and we have a lot of reasons NOT to do so.

Poor guy: so many moderators zeroing in on him :-) Given that the post contains package names and DB field names I can easily see why he would prefer to keep that secret. What's more, that information could be easily altered (and in a fraction of the time it took to argue why it shouldn't be deleted, IMO).

Yup.

And, the staff are all volunteers. And for every time this comes up publicly, we probably get ten requests via PM or email. I like the idea that for all of those future requests we can direct folks to this thread.

I think the volunteer, unpaid staff typically do help out when somebody can say "I regret posting DB field names". But that didn't happen here.

On the other hand, we have seen a rash of people come, ask a question, and the moment they get an answer, they delete the question.

So, yes, I suppose the unpaid, volunteer staff look like jerks for not being the servant to every person with a whim. And, at the same time, they are following the directions I gave: do not delete unless there is a satisfactory reason that will be respectful to the people that replied.

Did I mention that the staff are unpaid volunteers? Did I mention that when people try to shame them into being their unpaid servants it kinda pisses me off?

Probably.

However, paraphrasing Fred, we want to teach people to fish, not fish for them. We could spend time changing his post, however:

  • since he has not provided a good reason for deletion / changing the post this may not suit his needs - this would be wasted time
  • he would get the impression that we are here to serve him
  • others would not learn our reasoning behind not changing / deleting at whim

  • This is not just our picking on non-staff though - everybody lives by the same rules. Paul asked me for something the other day, and I gave Paul what he needed in order for him to use it himself and get what he had originally asked me for. Even Paul has to fish for himself.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating deleting stuff that got answers willy-nilly. What seems missing, though, amongst the plethora of moderator posts, is to tell leonardo that he needs to be specific about what he'd like to see removed, and why. His last post indicates that he still doesn't understand that.

    Tim,

As Paul mentioned, we get many of these request, and most of them are done in private. This one is not one of them as the user started a topic (actually two topics) for it.

Anyway, I guess it is hard to imply from this topic, but there is also some private stuff going on too -- both between moderators and with the original poster. It is unfortunate that the public side of the discussion can be interpreted as moderators just "piling on". We were trying to make the topic reusable for others too.

Really? Nobody told him he needs to be specific? These didn't do just that?

Well, it didn't seem to get through. But since Henry said that there's more to it than meets the eye I don't want to belabour the point. No need to pile on to me as well :-)
