Read this if you don't mind spoilers. It sounds like a slasher flick with a huge special effects budget.

It was ok. It is not a "slasher flick" and it does have some amazing special effects. I saw it in 3D iMAX but wasn't blown away by the 3D. The story had some huge plot holes that are difficult to look past. I'd give it about 3.5 out of 5.

For someone who really liked "Aliens" (ie. saw it in the theater more than once), but thought "Alien" was just okay, would you recommend this movie? The Ridley Scott factor is currently making me think that I can wait for the DVD on Prometheus.

Hearing about Prometheus got me in the mood for Aliens, so I watched it this past weekend for the umpteenth time. Still pure awesome.

And of course, you have to watch the extended edition .... To this day, I still can't believe they removed all the "Sentry Guns" scenes from the theater version of the movie.

Not really. I really like Alien (and Aliens). Prometheus was not as good as either.

Really? This was my first time with the extended edition and the additional scenes: where Ripley finds out her daughter is dead, where Newt's parents find the alien wreckage and the sentry guns scene didn't do much for me. I think the first two didn't keep with the pacing of an action movie (they fit the mood of the first film perfectly). The sentry guns are great technology that fit the era, but watching a counter tick down with no imminent threat didn't build the tension for me (compared to, say, when Ripley shoots her pulse rifle empty in the queen's nest). And who builds an area-denial weapon with only 1000 rounds capacity!

The two sentry guns scenes (or three, if you count the setup) lasted less than two minutes. They should have definitely kept it. Why? Without those scenes, the aliens came off as way too smart. On one side, you have the marines, whom have the tactics of working as a team. And on the other side, you have a hive mentallity. It is hard to envision, that on the first attack, the aliens can find them so easily, and know to try going across the ceiling first. Those sentry guns scenes show that the aliens tried to go through the front door, and lost a ton of lives, before trying something else.

BTW, the planning scene also felt different... with the extended edition, Ripley talked about blocking this and that, forcing this or that path, and placing the sentries here and there and other stuff -- ending with Corporal Hicks in agreement. In the theater, most of the discussion didn't happen -- except for the weilding plates over stuff part. And Corporal Hicks in agreement almost felt patronizing.

Squirrels are devilishly smart. They just choose not to show it most of the time to prevent the inevitable genocidal war (which they would probably win).

I had a few laughs with Maddox' Prometheus 'review'
I've seen it and I found it to be ok. Nothing special, but entertaining. I liked Alien better, and Aliens is still my favorite movie in the franchise.
