Initial certification in Java

Hi Friends,
I am a java programmer, working in a Software company from the past 1yr, I want start prepring for java certifications. Can you guys guide me which one to go for initially, i mean SCJP/OCJP, also which material would be good for preparation.

As you told that you are working in Java for past 1 yr....U must be having basic knowledge for concepts in Java.....Just brush up them and I suggest you can start with SCJP book by Kaithy Sierra...

Also as Java 7 certification has come into market...just wait for some time and buy a book for new SCJP Exam.

Thanks for the reply. What are the prerequisites for OCPJP 7 certification. My question may sound odd, Do i have to clear any preliminary to write the OCJP 7?

Yes Sir...  ....u have to clear OCA exam to qualify for SCJP 7...

I have to correct you here. it is not SCJP 7. it is OCPJP 7. and for OCPJP 7 certification you should have OCAJ 7 certification.or if you have previous programmer certification for e.g ocpjp 6 or 5 then you can go for upgrade . but since you are starting go through the first path. also the book for OCPJP 7 is out in the market. you can buy it and start preparing for it. also the syllabus of OCA 7 is subset of OCPJP 7 , so you won't require any seperate book for that.
