I am very new to Java sockets. However, I want to develop a network simulator for work. How do I get started?

It isn't clear to me why a "network simulator" requires the use of sockets at all. Are you sure you are going down the right path with that question?
 
I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
