for ocpjp 7 you have to clear two exams. first one is associate exam ocaj 7. after that you can appear in ocpjp 7. OR you can appear for previous programmer exam e.g scjp/ocpjp 5, 6 and then later upgrade the certification to 7.
as of now there is no book for ocpjp 7 but the most popular book for ocpjp 6 exam has its new version coming in few months for ocpjp 7. you can either wait for the book to come and give exam later or you can start preparing even now and learn the new objectives from the internet and here on javaranch. also i recommend you use the search feature of javaranch and dig deeper. you will get nice threads on how to prepare for the exam

Is it necessary to clear ocaj 7? We cannot appear for ocpjp 7 directly as was the case for scjp 1.6 ?

Yes. You cannot directly go to OCPJP 7.

As Gurpreet said, it is now called OCPJP. But no, it is not released yet. It still in beta. See this.

The OCPJP 7 Upgrade exam, which you can take only if you already have SCJP 6 (or the new OCAJP7), has been released. See this for the Upgrade Exam.

Paul.

We can't take the OCPJP 7 Exam ( Java SE 7 Programmer II) directly. We need to finish prior certification OCAJP Exam (Java SE 7 Programmer II).

For easy to understand visit this Oracle page

AFAIK, OCAJP 7 is in final version, but OCPJP 7 is still in beta.

I'm not sure when OCPJP 7 will be released.

However, few disadvantages I know of beta exam are:
1) Passing score is not published on website.
2) It takes much more time (around 11-12 weeks) to get the certificate.
3) I'm not sure whether the certificate will contain the word 'beta'.

Yes, I just saw it right now.

I'm wondering whether this is final version of exam - there's no word 'beta' on that page

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
