Classcast exception in bean:define

I am facing a peculiar problem. My application server is Oracle10g App Server. If the application has thrown any error, due to DB object missing etc, the JSPs whereever we are using <bean efine /> start throwing ClassCastException, since we havent explicitly mentioned "type" option even while using "String". Problem could be resolved only by restarting the server or if we have given the "type" parameter.

However this problem we are not facing while we are using the Struts 1.2.9 jars with eclipse-oracle10g integrated servers.

Wanted to understand the depth and root cause of the problem.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
