Static Content from Webserver

Dear All,

In my environment(development), we have one webserver (Apache) in front of Weblogic application server. We are rendering the static contents like .js, .css and .img files from Apache and applications content(Jsp,EJB.. etc) from Weblogic. We are also configuring the URL patterns that needs to be delegated to Weblogic server.

What is the actual logic behind this and what is expected from that webserver?. Whether it is acting as load balancer also or only static content supply? More over how system understand to supply static contents from webserver and rest from App server? Just trying to understand the actual logic.

Please also share the link of any material which describe about the above concepts.

Thanks advance.
