Weblogic 8 descriptor files will not update

Hi,
We are using Weblogic 8.1 SP3 (no laughing) and we make changes to our descriptor files occasionally to tweak bean caches for example. Descriptor files are not editable via console for this version so we rely on editing the xml files directly, building against them, and restarting weblogic. We have tried various things to no avail. We have tried manually copying files to the META-INF dir before and after building so that weblogic will recognize a change in the file. We have also added additional comments to the file to make sure the file size has changed. No matter what we try we cannot get them to update. We are not running any clustered environments. In development, we don't have to anything special for them to be updated. Any ideas?

Still no solution beyond completely taking Weblogic down and back up.
