Give yourself more time than you think you need. If you are new to Java, you are most likely going to find the material extremely challenging. In my shop, everyone is required to have the certification. They are all experienced Java developers, and most of them used between four and six months to study.

Well, there are no silly questions

Now, coming to your doubt - I would suggest to have ample of time in hand and pick two books:
1) Head First Java - This will help you to learn basics of Java. If you've any previous experience in programming, and can understand core specifications, then you can also go for Java Language Specification.
2) SCJP guide (Sierra-Bates) - This book is totally focused on certification and sometimes, doesn't go to the very basics of Java. Most of the time it will clear the basic concepts as well, but it is better to know basics of language before you go for certification specific book.

However, if you are having some experience, I would suggest to pick SCJP book straight-away and go through a couple of chapters. If you find it difficult, you can always fall back to Head First Java followed by SCJP guide.

I hope this helps.

All the best!
