I ended up getting a Roku 2. It has several apps that AppleTV currently doesn't and there are a lot of really interesting channels available. Not all of them are free, however. It supports 1080p if the service streams it (Netflix, for example). I'm going to use it for a while and see how I like it. I might upgrade my Apple TV anyway. But I plan on installing a 24" LED in the corner of my office and purely using the Roku.
