Tunning apache server to handle heavy load

Hi all

My problem is : when number of simultaneous user exceed 1024 my apache server stop responding

i using apache2 to host my site .

i have server with good configuration(128gb ram). i want to utilize it properly . current my apache server can serve only 1024 simulateous user . i want to increase it till 6000.

in httpd.conf i have change follwing parameter

ServerLimit 6000
MaxClients 6000


but it did not work . still my server stop responding at 1024 connection

using following command to check httpd commection
]# ps aux | grep 'httpd' | wc -l
