The "thumbs up" button just means you agree with a post; I imagine that three people read my post and said "I haven't heard of him either" so they pushed the button. They don't mean to specifically say they're glad they never heard of him, or anything like that, just that they never have.

Some times it seems unfair that bollywood singers get all the fame (in India at least), while the real brain behind them is the music director. A good voice is God's gift. And of course, vocal jugglery is certainly not a trivial thing to master, yet, it is very much programmatic/mechanical. To make use of these things to create good music is, imho, pure art. Whenever I listen to songs by Lata, Rafi, and Kishore, I cannot but be overawed by the genius of Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishan, or R D Burman. Unfortunately, west has ears only for Mozart, Bach, or Beethoven Well, it's their loss 
Anyway, Sonu Nigam is a fine vocalist. He is not, however, anywhere close to other great bollywood vocalists I mentioned above. I would actually be appalled to know if any one outside India knows him and does not know Lata, Rafi, and Kishore. Its like you know Yanni but not Mozart!

Of course, he is a good looking guy who can almost sing and dance and smile, marketed and packaged for young pre-teen and early-teenage girls.
Its a very profitable business.
I don't know long its been going on. I know Dick Clark did it for Fabian, Bobby Rydell, and Franky Avalon in the late 50s/early 60s.
