Correlation ID vs Message ID in JMS

I have gone through internet content but i am unable to understand purpose of correlation ID.

I have received two messages from ESB and found that both have same correlation ID but different Message ID.

About correlation ID i have read: A correlation ID is used to correlate response messages with request messages when an application invokes a request-response operation.

i am not getting term request messages here....

as what i do is, i connect to JMS Server with address and just listen on topic, thats all./...

so Anyone could tell difference in more lay man language?
