Ok, so I've been reading the excellent book by Kathy and Bert for the last couple of months now. I'll read the chapters and I understand and digest the majority of the content however, when I try tackling some of the self test questions I just shudder at the sight of them. Some questions can be so complicated, I think half of it is the compact nature of the question...

I have been writing java for 7+ years now, do I just have to keep plodding along and get more and more familiar with the style of the questions?

So my question is: I'm taking the exam (Java Standard Edition 6 Programmer Certified Professional Exam) in a few weeks, between now and then I'm enrolled on an official 5 day Oracle instructor led training course (Java Programming Language, Java SE 6) to be immersed in the topics, will I be ready for the exam? I know you don't have the answer but any hints and tips would be great thank you.

Ps, With your hints and tips I may not need my retake voucher!!!

will I be ready for the exam?

you can check it by yourself there, just take some mock-tests, if you score good then of-course you are ready.
please refer scjp/ocpjp faq's given at http://faq.javaranch.com/java/ScjpFaq
you will find all your answers about mock exams there and much much more.
