Is tomcat an AppServer?

I am under the assumption that tomcat is a Web server as it doesn't support ear files, caching, load balancing. During discussion with another senior developer, there was argument saying tomcat is Application Server.
Can someone pen in your point of view for the same.

Tomcat is web container. Google web server vs web container vs app server and you will find dozens of articles on it.
