Does spring integration use any JMS container below it?

NO. Why would it? I mean you can use a JMS Adapter or Gateway to talk to any JMS "container" But Spring Integration itself doesn't force JMS on you or is a JMS implementation. It just provides the connectivity to a JMS Message Broker, or to AMQP, or any other transport mechanism.

It builds on top of the existing JmsTemplate available in Spring since 1.1 (if you are familiar already with JmsTemplate)

In addition to what Mark stated you can also use JMS backed message channels, pretty cool
