memberOf attribute in LDAP

I've been adding a member (cn=some name, ou=people,dc=xxx,dc=xxx) to a group directly, so far its good, but now onwards we need to check group before adding. i.e. we need to use the memberof operational attribute to check group membership.

Usually I simply use basic api to modify attributes, How do we use the memberof operational attribute in the above code? What is memberof attribute?

Ok, I got clue on it.
memberOf is an attribute name which fetch the group names, i.e. If you give your id and search for memberOf attribute, you will get the list of groups associated to your id.
In my LDAP api, it is just normal search attribute, I thought its extra search other than normal search.
