If you are suggesting the OP uses the getHardwareAddress method, it was only added in Java 1.6.

Hmm, you're right. I hate it when that happens - you find the perfect class / method you need, only to find out you can't use it because it's not available in the version you're using.
I once wrote my own simplified copy of URLClassLoader because I needed it to close the files it loaded from, and I couldn't use Java 7 which added a close() method to URLClassLoader...
