I bought a new laptop with McAfee trial version installed for a month. Unfortunately I had to re-install the OS within a week, and need to install a new anti-virus.

I am looking for a free anti-virus and heard Avast is good from my friends. Any other suggestions you guys have? My laptop OS is Win7.

I put AVG Free on my relation's pc when I help them with computer problems. I've also used Avast on the Trinity Rescue Disk to try to clean PC's without booting Windows, but I've never used their Windows client.

I also use AVG free, but I've heard good things about Microsoft's Windows Defender and may switch.

I've used AVG free in the past. It seemed to do its job, but gawd those annoying spontaneous popups. I got so sick of em I uninstalled AVG.

Another vote for either AVG or Avast. I've used both extensively, installed them for many friends and co-workers. I've never been disappointed in either one, and never seen an infection on any computer that was kept updated.

Note that I've only used the free versions. The Pro versions just seem to add a lot of bloat that I don't need or want on my system.

Yes, it is so secure you can't even run the OS you want

Maybe I should give it a try. Does it pester the user with annoying pop-ups?

I've been using Avast for a couple of years and love it! When I recently installed it on my Win7 machine, I did start seeing popups, right after startup, just telling me it's been updated, or some such message. Not really annoying to me!
