JavaScript is interesting in that it has both object-oriented and functional natures. jQuery takes best advantage of JavaScript as a functional language, while a framework such as Prototype focuses on its object-ed oriented nature.

The Ninja book prepares you for either approach. Chapters 3 through 5 cover functions and closures, and chapter 6 focuses on object-orientation via prototypes.
