Which would look better on a resume? Being an associate of the current Java certification test, or a programmer level certification on 6? I intend to upgrade eventually, but I suck at this whole process of certification seeking as this is my first one of any type, and I want to jump into the work force now and start getting experience. I have my BS in Computer Science already, so I'm looking to shove more pieces of paper in perspective employers' faces in order to make them more agreeable to my want of being employed...

There are a few philosophies on certifications and they will all have different opinions for that answer.

1) "I don't care about certs" - Obviously either one is fine here. Although you will probably learn more with SCJP6. Which will help you interview better.

2) "Certs are good. I like seeing one." The OCAJP 7 is better here because it is easier (and therefore faster to get.)

3) "I actually understand the difference between these certs." - SCJP 6 is better because it is harder and therefore means more.

My advice is to go with the OCAJP 7. I think you'll be better off in the long run because it lets you take the OCPJP 7 after. Also, the OCAJP is an easy test so you'll get certified faster and build confidence for taking the harder OCPJP 7. (The SCJP 6 is also a hard test - having it as the first cert isn't low hanging fruit.)

I was under the impression that you can take the upgrade test to OCJP7 as long as you had a previous certification such as SCJP6...

You can. You'd have to take a second exam after either way to get to OCPJP 7. I was trying to show that you can get the first cert faster with one.
