Installing Hadoop on ubuntu 12.10

I'm new to hadoop and it seems hadoop namenode -format is not running as I get the
command not found error on the console.
Perhaps I configured the env-sh file incorrectly. I've read elsewhere that the bash file needs to be modified on the local machine.
I'm a bit a lost, but I have found the location of my jdk and configured it in the java_home parameter for the file.

Any clue what's wrong?
