I think cows should be very powerful

I see the new "cows" that a rancher can have. I think this is cool. But I think that a cow should be defined as being a lot more than a normal thumbs up. Lots more.

Maybe only bartenders or better can give them? Maybe only people with cows? I don't know, and its probably more of something for the bartenders to chew the fat over.

Just seems to me that cows should be very powerful.

All IMHO, etc.

Right now, ranchers and above can give out cows. Rancher as you might know are members who have made good and useful posts.

The feature is more or less beta, and will be tweaked as we go along.

Pat,
Yes. That is the intention - for cows to be much rarer than a thumbs up. As a general rule of thumb, a post gets a cow if the post is awesome or particularly helpful. An above and beyond thing. And since cows are new, we are also granting cows for "past helpfulness" in some cases.

Just realized that this is likely not known to the ranchers -- unless I missed an announcement. This means that Pat, who is already a rancher, will just see the new cow granting feature, and can only conclude that anyone (including greenhorns and ranchhands) can grant cows.

Yes thats what i thought too. The JForum day announcement does mention that ranchers can give cows, but its buried in cowboy-ese, and its highly likely that few people read it.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
