we create html pages on the front end, but how do we store the data and retieve it when we want? when do we get in use of xml and jdbc?

Have you written any code on your server to handle the POST from your HTML forms? Are you using servlets, Spring or some other Java framework? Sounds like you may be a little out of your depth with this - try working through some tutorials perhaps?
