I only wish I'd had a better camera to photograph it. Taken with Sony Handycam, 3.3 MP @max optical zoom at 13:31 IST, about 45 minutes after local (solar) noon.

I think the picture is very pretty, but is it special for you to see the moon at noon? Maybe it is because there is lesser light in the higher latitudes here in Europe, but we see the moon in the day time quite frequently. You are from India right?

Seeing the moon during the day isn't hard...but seeing a crescent like this might be. IANAA (I Am Not An Astronomer), but I believe you only have a crescent moon when it is near to the Sun in the sky. And since the Sun is so much brighter than the moon, it would tend to wash out.

I wanted to google factors that influence visibility of the Moon in daytime, but landed at http://www.crescentwatch.org/ instead. They have really nice pictures of first crescents, though.

Fred is right, around new moon the Moon is close to the Sun in the sky. I've found a site which says it makes the Moon more illuminated and brighter, thus easier to spot in daytime (hmmm, not so sure....)

Seeing a crescent moon in the middle of the day is rare here. This was a first for me, and I'm over 60 years old.

From an astronomical point of view, having a crescent moon like that in the daytime sky should happen every (lunar) month, three or four days after new moon. You'll also get one in the opposite orientation every month, three or four days before new moon. But generally most people don't look up at the sky that much. Try asking somebody what phase the moon is in right now, and you'll almost never find somebody who can answer without looking at the moon or a calendar or something like that.

I agree. Here's the link: http://aspose.com/file-tools
