Netflix is now creating original content for streaming. Their first series is called House of Cards and stars Kevin Spacey.

Sure, things have been moving to streaming, and we knew a sea change was coming. But this strikes me as a milestone in that journey.

Isn't Netflix also producing the 10-15 mini-episodes of "Arrested Development", one of the funniest shows to ever air on TV?

Not sure (I don't watch a lot of TV). I got the announcement for this in email (I have a Netflix streaming account).

But Arrested Development is an established show, right? This is the first, at least that I've heard of (and I may out of the loop), content produced just to stream from Netflix. I find it a significant development.

Well to be fair, House of Cards is a US remake of a Brit series. But if it's half as good as the original, it will be worth watching.

Arrested Development is an "established series", yes. One that's been off the air since 2006. So it's a bit different than picking up an existing successful series.

But yes, this does seem to be a significant new development of some sort.

The biggest problem is that the business of delivering content is a much differrent business than creating content. Netflix is really really good and delivering content. Whether they can create good content is yet to be seen

Don't get me wrong. I love netflix, and I dream of the day when all entertainment is on-demand. However, I do not have high hopes on Netflix creating quality programming. I think the quality of ad-supported/free content on sites like Youtube will improve before Netflix original programming.

Well, I think the content is still being created by studios comprised of people who have done this sort of thing before for other outlets. The question is whether Netflix can make a profit, overall, with this new business model. And whether, after this first season of their first series, they will be willing and able to spend the money to attract quality actors, writers, directors, etc in the future. I hope they can.

I agree. Here's the link: http://ej-technologies/jprofiler - if it wasn't for jprofiler, we would need to run our stuff on 16 servers instead of 3.
