Can anyone tell me which java certification is right for me?
1. Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 5/SE 6
2. Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer
I have gone through the exam topics for both and I know half of both. I have 2 yrs exp in Java development.
First where you want to go? The v5/v6 OCA cert covers a wide variety of areas, primarily for junior programmers and managers who uses java technologies. The v7 OCA cert on the other hand is practically a "subset" of what a experienced Java programmer needs to know (v7 OCA is a subset of the old v5/v6 SCJP cert).
If you are looking to become Java programmer then v7 cert is better.
since v7 OCA is a subset of v5/v6 OCA wont it be beneficial to give the later. But if i give v5/v7 OCA then later on for the next professional certificate of OCP i would have to take the v7 OCA exam right??

If you have 2 years of actual experience, then you should aim for the OCP, not the OCA, IMO. Who do you think will be impressed by an associate's certification compared to the actual experience?
(Personally I don't know anyone who would be impressed by any of these certifications, except perhaps the architect's certification, but that's another topic.)

Correction v7 OCA is the subset of the v5/v6 OCPJP (the old SCJP) , not v5/v6 OCA.
And Ulf is right, the actual thing is the OCPJP. So if you ultimately aim to get OCPJP, then you need to consider which version are you more comfortable. v5/v6 OCPJP is 1 exam while the v7 OCPJP is 2 exams (OCA+OCP).
