Scala in Action: interoperability with third-party applications

Hi,

I'm keen on learning Scala and applying it to existing applications that we have. Recently we've been developing new applications in Grails which has a rich set of plugins to enable interaction with third-party applications. For example, a recent project of ours involved interaction with existing web services and Shibboleth authentication, both of which were quite nicely catered for by Grails and its plugins.

What does Scala provide in this respect and is this a topic area covered by your book? Is it a case of building on Java capabilities or does there tend to be higher level abstractions?

Thanks.
