As far as I know, Apache POI is still the defacto standard library for that sort of thing.

It's not good practice to write POI code using the HSSF API at this point. The SS API encapsulates both HSSF and XSSF, and thus can handle both XLS and XLSX files - which is generally what you'd want to do.
