I had wanted to take the SCEA exam two maybe three years ago, got a voucher, procrastinated until it expired, which I regret a lot now . I went into Oracle's website yesterday to find out that I had to take an approved course before I could get certified. I also found out that I could take this course after I finish all 3 parts of the exam. How is everyone else doing this? The path to OCM JEA certification seems a little unclear to me. The way I understand the path I could do the follow the steps below to get certified.
- Take the OCM JEE6 EA Beta exam
- Download and complete assignment
- Complete Essay
- Finish approved course when its financially viable for you and you have the time to take it and when you actually want to receive the certification. I couldn't seem to find how long one can delay taking this course after completing the 3 parts.
Does this make sense? (In other words, is my understanding correct?)
You can take the course at any point of time during 3 parts. Usually people are taking it after completing the essay and got to know that they have cleared the exam. To get the certificate mandatory course which is very cheap is picked. The intention of the course is if there any areas which you feel you are not strong at and need some guidance, those areas can be improved by taking the course. This can be either at part 1 or while doing designing in part 2. I guess the steps you have mentioned about the beta and completing assignment works fine.
I found in most of the assignments which I get for review, basic things are lost in the design it may be because one thinks about the design in detail and miss the main part and covers rest all other parts.
I am a certified master developer. I wanted to take all the developer exams & then do my architect exams. I'm not going to bother doing any of them now because I'm not going to pay for a mandatory course. I was going to do my MySQL certifications as well but decided against that also. I hope the mandatory course requirement did not push you towards this decision . That would be kinda drastic I think.

yeah the introduction of the mandatory course & the manner which Oracle did it made me doubt the future of Java.
I'm seeing an increasing number of jobs using C++, PHP & Python so I believe these languages will be the future,
