In Jsp Spec I have read the following under the topic expression

"An expression element in a JSP page is a scripting language expression that is evaluated and the result is coerced to a String"

Why should the evaluated result should be coerced to a String can anyone explain in detail

Because JSPs generate character data, and the Java datatype for character data is the String.
