Instead of a long list of options, please put big buttons with "Java", "Certification", "Mobile" etc. When a user hovers over those buttons, he should see the sub categories in a box. It becomes easy to navigate. If it is not possible to do this or if its not a good idea, then please tell me why.

Thank you for your suggestion and interest in making CodeRanch a better place.

This site (including the software that runs this site) is run by volunteers (literally). These volunteers help with implementing/maintaining the forum software features. As software professionals, there are a lot of things we would like to do to improve the user experience in these forums. Since these volunteers can only work in their spare time to implement these features, many of these things take time to be implemented and sometimes may not even get implemented.

Right now, we are experimenting with a beta view for the forum threads. The grand goal is to move to a newer look and feel for the entire forums (not just the thread view). So yes, we have noted your request for making the forum listing page look different, but we can't guarantee that it will be done.

Also, since you are new, you may not be aware of all the features we do have. If you go into the "My Profile" second, and expand the "Site Personalization", you can turn off specific forums or (I believe) even entire catagories, thus hiding any you may not care about.

I was not aware of that. I thought that the ad revenue would be able to afford this place a full time developer or two. Is there any way in which you can boost your revenue and hire full time employees ?

As you have probably noticed, there are very few ads on this site. I practically don't know about them at all. It's a rare exception on the web nowadays, I'd say. There are some other threads in this forum that discuss advertisements and from them it is apparent that the owner of this site doesn't want to expand the ads on code ranch unless absolutely necessary (which I'm very grateful for).

Secondly, our wish list is not exactly empty, so even with a full time developer, not all ideas would get implemented. And as the work on a new look for this site is in progress (and, as far as I know, it should address the organization of the forums somehow as well), investing large amount of work into the current look probably isn't going to happen.

For now, the currently available option Fred has mentioned can help reducing the clutter, if there are forums you aren't interested to see at all (you can still access them using the forum combo box in forum listing page, if needed).

James, if you meant helping with the forum development tasks, the only people involved in that activity at this point are the moderators. There are certain reasons why we have had it that way so far. As you might already know, we (the current moderators) keep a watch on the forums for people who constantly help others in the forums in a friendly way. Over time, some of them are invited to be a moderator. If they decide to accept the invitation, they are given an option to *optionally* help out with the forum software development tasks.

As Jaikiran stated, I was hoping to get involved in the development tasks. If this is currently given to the moderators, fair enough. It would be nice to get more involved on the site, more than simply answering questions. But I understand why the development tasks are only limited to a select few.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
