Axis2 - New Transport - Help to understand

Hello partners!
I've been told, that I need to write a new transport for Axis2 (among HTTP, JMS, etc.) for internal protocol.
Am I correct that main target of transport is transforming incoming message to format, that Axis2 can understand?
I mean if I send SOAP message over HTTP, then HTTP transport handles request, extracts envelope and transmits it to Axis2 Engine, which can understand standard SOAP envelope and executes the service, then backward transformation for outgoing message. Please put me right if I'm wrong, I just need to understand the concept. Thanks.
