This week's book giveaway is in the OO, Patterns, UML and Refactoring forum. We're giving away four copies of Refactoring for Software Design Smells: Managing Technical Debt and have Girish Suryanarayana, Ganesh Samarthyam & Tushar Sharma on-line! See this thread for details.
You learn to solve hard problems by practice experience and thought. And there is no difference; you solve a problem in C exactly the same way you would in any procedural language and you solve a problem in Java exactly the same way as for any object language.
It is difficult to suggest a book. You might want a book about algorithms. Abelson and Sussman is about creating algorithms in Scheme, which is relted to LISP. Code Complete by McConnell is about the process of constructing applications. Howard and LeBlanc and others have written several books about securing software. I do not actually know which book would best suit your needs. You could start by googling for Niklaus Wirth Algorithms because you can download that book free of charge.
