Custom Components - Passing parameters and calling functions

Hello everybody,
I followed this tutorial

http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/fxml_get_started/custom_control.htm

to create a custom component in my JavaFx 2 application. This tutorial shows a simple solution with only a string as variable parameter to pass to the custom components.
My question is: How can i pass variable parameters from the main Controller to the controller of custom components and vice-versa how to call a function in the main controller from the controller of custom component.

Thanks in advance.

Gianfranco
