Is jforum worth my time

Hey all,

I'm looking for a J2EE based forum software to support my gaming community. I've come across jforum and have installed it on my Glassfish 3 server supported by a mysql database.

I'm very disappointed to say while I've found it to be a rather easy process I'm left with a rather uneasy feeling. Jforums required some massaging to have the database support the scripts provided (they were for a previous revision of mysql). Additionally the most recent updates to the official code branch are from 2 years ago with an update to the classpath for a 2year old beta being updated 1 year ago without any other code changes.

Does this product have a community at all or am I wasting my time?

The future of stock JForum is indeed in doubt. A version 3 is in the works, but the main developer has acknowledged that progress is very slow, and unless help came along it would not get done any time soon.

You may wish to check out http://code.google.com/p/jforum2/ instead; it's a fork of stock JForum that's since then seen a number of fixes and improvements. I happen to know that an update is in the works that will add significant new functionality (the changes are already in the source code repository).

I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

One thing I can say is that I learned a lot about BBS systems and Java itself by going through its source code and I'm still learning.

It is open source. You can learn from its source code unless you already know all that stuff.

As for usefulness of this BBS system, I find it pretty useful.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
