In my application I have several page fragments poping up for various user input. What is a good way to control the z-index so the current page fragment will appear on top of the calling page?

Set the z-index property.

I realize that but is there a prefered method to keep up with the current page z-index so the called page can read this value and make sure called page's z-index is greater?

Not at all sure what you mean by "called page".

Regardless, you can use jQuery (or standard DOM API in modern browsers) to get the computed value of z-index for any element.
