This is the place to whine about how this site sucks or what new forums you want.

Ok, the site doesn't suck. Did you build it with JBuilder or Symantec VisualCafe? <snicker snicker>.
I bet the answer is neither. ..

"Neither" is correct. In fact, you are waaaaay off.
I bought this package. All I had to do was make it work with my ISP. It's all Perl.

This is pretty cool. Looks sharp.
Can you give a ballpark figure on the price?

The UBB software is $55 per year. Domain name and ISP charges are extra.
I made some modifications to the program - it's pretty easy to do since you get all the source.

I checked out the software and I see that they have a freeware version. Do you happen to know what the difference is between that and the version you purchased?
Thanks for the info.

Nope - I never tried the freeware version. At my day job I set up version 5.10 and there are a few things that are different, but nothing that makes a difference to me.
It seems there are a lot of people that use the free version, so it must be pretty decent.

Paul, I like the site -- hope it gets a lot of use. One question...How'd you get the name "Electric Porkchop"? Nice mascot -- looks beefier than Sun's.

Why porkchop? Cuz the nic will let you use any name you can dream up that is not already used!
I'm pretty sick of all the spins on "java" ...

This site is making me hungry! Other than that, I have no complaints.
Nice to see the UBB in action on the Web instead of an intranet. It does have a really nice layout, and deserves more exposure! Also, very nice implementation!

Could you please add a Networks or Networking forum, in the IT sense...not "getting to know someone"?
Thanks.

I have a forum called "Sockets and Internet Protocols" - I take it that what you want to talk about is different than that? Hardware stuff? CIFS/SMB?

Yes. Sockets and Internet Protocols is the answer. I must have overlooked it because I didn't know what Sockets are, but do understand Internet Protocols.
Thanks!!

What kind of space requirements(HD space) are you seeing? How much space does your ISP give you?
Is there a way to only authorize only certain people to see/be able to get into certain threads?
Also, What happened to the "notify me by email if someone responds" thing?

space: I dunno. Starts off with a meg or two.
ISP: Not sure. Prolly ten megs.
authorize: The new version has private forums of all sorts. It is available now. I'm putting off upgrading because in two weeks they will have a digest feature. Since I've made several modifications to the software, I don't want to have to make all those mods twice.
notify: That feature is available only if you post a new topic. If you like it, I encourage you to start more topics! I think the new version may have some facility for alling "reply" people to have the e-mail sent too. We'll find out in a coupla weeks!
Have you noticed the "profile signature" thing?

By the way, is there any way to turn off the automatic notification. On a few questions I've posted I still get notifications, even though my immediate requirement has been met.
I still go back and browse those threads, but th egetting and junking of emails seems a little pointless.

Not that I'm aware of.
I think a lot of people aren't used to starting a new thread when the discussion changes.
The next version has a bunch of new features. Maybe that's one that has been addressed.
