Hello Partners!
I want to get involved in SOA, and I was suggested to start from building Canonical Data Model.
Where should I start? Is this just a bunch of XSDs with all data types (that will be used in future WSDLs) defined?

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
