Platform game background map

I'm developing my first game. I made the character and he's jumping around a single screen. I want to do something like Mario, but with slopes. I didn't find a step by step explanation on building a sidescrolling environment.
My few, confused ideas, for now are these:

Make a Tilemap class (with fields containing positions and number of tiles)
Break the painted map into tiles with arrays
Combine them and generate a level

I've never seen somebody doing that. So I ask if I'm pointing in the right direction, and if there are good resources to tackle the problem (again with a deep explanation).
