Best StarOffice and OpenOffice.org tips

Hey,
These are some things I made sure everyone knew in the training class last week.

Calc
- A shortcut that's in the book but I LOVE is for Calc. You double-click in any formula cell and it shows you, color coded, what the cells are that it's drawing data from. Then you can drag the colored borders to other cells to change the formulas.
- Auto fill, either incremement or same number, with numbers or dates or months. Just type 1 at the top of a cell, for instance, and then select that cell and a bunch under, choose Edit > Fill > Series, specify an increment, and boom, you've got a bunch of numbers in those cells.
- In a column of strings, click in an empty cell and do Ctrl + D, and you'll get a popup selection list of the previous values. Select one and hit enter.
Writer
- Floating frames are a great way to include any other file in a Writer doc. Just Insert > Floating frame and pick what you want.
- Frames and sections (not floating frames) are ways to set off bits of the page for special formatting. Insert > and pick the right option. You can then put anythign in you want: multi column, graphics strung together with text, etc.
- You get the drawing tools in Writer, some of'em anyway. Click on the Drawing TOols icon on the left hand toolbar.
- Tools > Gallery is where the clip art is, you can add your own.
- You can do vertical text by enabling Asian language support under tools > options > language settings > languages. Then when you click on the Text tool of the Drawing Tools in Writer or any drawing tools in Draw, you get three vertical text options (regular, expands-a-lot, and callout with line).
Draw
- Love it! Use it! ;>

Hi
Thanks for the tips. It has been a pleasure having you here this week. Thank You for sharing your knowledge. I'm off to spread the word about OOo. I have a meeting this afternoon about our Annual Planning meeting. (Crazy I know) We are planning a week in April to discuss future directions in IT and I think OOo will be a big part of our future plans.
Best Regards
Sal

Thanks for all the tips, I think I'm going to use OOo, and I will be able to get others into it also. Thanks for all your knowledge. I wish you goodluck on your future books.
I'm going to write also though. I've been writing for some months. Also a few publications on paper about JavaWebStart and JavaDoc, and in the near future about Java2ME maybe I can write something about OOo. For a dutch magazine, so they are going to use OOo, I will remember you though, maybe I am going to ask you something in the future if you don't bother of course.
Regards,
Mark Monster

Thanks ot both of you for making this a lively, interesting week!
Sal, good luck with the planning meeting. If you Win and decide to do a bulk order of books, lmk since I'm a retailer.
Mark, thanks too and good luck with the articles!
One of the editors at Prentice Hall, Debby van Dyck, is and reads Dutch, come to think of it, I think we have some angle going in the works but am not sure what it is.
Thanks y'all,
Solveig
