xsl match and select attribute

correct me if I'm wrong, but the match attribute in template can reach to <c> tag without specifying the steps:
match="c", and it will affect all <c> tags no matter how deep the locations are through out the document

while the select attribute in apply-templates must specify the steps to reach <c> like so (assuming match="/"):
select="a/b/c"

is this correct?
thanks you

With a little knowledge, a cast iron skillet is non-stick and lasts a lifetime.
