Hi John

I am just about to start a BDD development role using Cucumber JVM and so was about to purchase

The Cucumber Book: Behaviour-Driven Development for Testers and Developers (Pragmatic Programmers)

What does BDD in Action offer that's different and therefore why I should consider purchasing it?

Thanks

The Cucumber Book is an excellent reference for Cucumber in Ruby, and provides a good introduction to BDD practices. But Cucumber is not the only BDD tool, and BDD is not about using a particular tool. BDD in Action is broader and covers more practices and tools, from high-level requirements analysis, through automated acceptance criteria (with examples and tools in several languages, such as Java, .Net and Python), and down to the unit testing level (again, with tools and examples in several languages, including Java, .Net, Javascript and so on). BDD in Action also covers the philosophy and conceptual approach behind BDD in detail, which is applicable for any language or platform.
