Are Java apprenticeships worthwhile?

I have seen many threads, where the career prospects for graduates/people without commercial experience is rather bleak.
In the UK, there are various apprenticeships available in Java programming and IT in general.
Of course, apprenticeships do not require any commercial Java experience.

Has anybody had any experience with a Java apprenticeship in the UK? If so, did it lead to a pemanent position?
Any opinions on their value?

Here is an example of one: Java Apprenticeship
