Does anyone have any first hand experience of e-cigarettes? I was googling around it turned out to be a case of TMI which is confusing.
What's a starter kid? Starter as in basic or starter as in beginner?
Does it taste the same? Does it feel the same? Any idea on how much the battery lasts?

PS. For all of those who are thinking on the lines of "Quit"; Thanks for your concern

A kid that complains every time you light another cigarette? (You probably mean "kit" instead of "kid").

Fortunately I've never smoked - so I can't tell you anything about e-cigarettes.

I too, am not a smoker, but in most cases, the term "starter kit" is everything needed to get started. It generally contains...

* All the items needed for basic operation -- that is purchased once.
* A small amount of the consumable items, such as batteries, for short operations (such as a week), for trial purposes.
* Instruction manuals.

Etc.... Good luck with trying to tame smoking. I know a lot of others who tried (mostly via cold turkey), and it definitely isn't easy.

If you look at E-cigarettes, there are a lot of different types of E-cigarettes. The ones I tried were the ones that were easier to get and were also very crappy. I bought one from the mall. It looks like a cigarette and it had a rechargeable battery. I lost the charger for that in an office move, so I got rid of it. It felt differrent than a cigarrette, and I don't know.. it felt differrent. Then 7-eleven started carrying the non-rechargeable ones. These e-cigarettes are supposed to be the equivalent of 2 packs of cigarettes, and also are priced the same. They are not rechargeable. SO, once it's done, you throw it out. These were really crappy. I threw them out

Eventually, I just quit. I think in both cases I missed the burn in the back of my throat. I realised that I wasn't addicted to nicotine as much as I was addicted to the feel of the cigarrette (the taste, the smell, holding it, the burn at the back of my throat, etc etc) Once I got my mind around the fact that the things I was addicted to all the things that I like about the cigarette were the one that were killing me, it was easier to quit

However, someone on my Facebook posted a video of their E-cigarette. That thing doesn't look like a cigarette. It looks more or less like a flute. She could blow some serious smoke out of it. I'm thinking like cigar-smoke kind of smoke. Wooh! I think if you really want to go for e-cigarettes, don't go for things that look like cigarettes. Those are crappy. There is a huge vaping community in the US. They don't even call it smoking. They call it vaping, and from what I'm read vapers don't go back to smoking once they start vaping. You are in India, right? I'm not sure how easily you can get vapers in India

Or just switch to hookah. I would smoke hookah if my wife would let me. Just go bubble-bubble-bubble while watching TV. I have never tried hookah, but I bet it would be awesome

Thanks Henry. Taming it is what I am after. The other day I realized I am not going to be young forever. (The others might have done much earlier, but for me, it took some time )

Thanks Jayesh, this was exactly the kind of first hand experience based feedback I was looking for.
I have tried cigarettes, cigars (damn, wont it ever end?), beedi (stink like hell), chilim (instant come and arrest me, at least in India), hookah (tilt it wrong once and you will regret it for life), gudgudi (hookah with a tube) as well as pipe smoking.
Of all the above I loved the pipe the most. Unfortunately it is too much of a chore. Fill, tamp, fill, tamp, light, puff, light, puff. So what's left is the cigarette.

Looks like e-cigarettes are not that "satisfying". Best option would be mind over matter. Control the urge. If not at least postpone it. Lets see how things go.

And in the end, a real life anecdote. Honest.
I had a colleague who was a fellow smoker. One day he decided to quit. We supported him as much as we could (avoid smoking in front of him, avoid talking to him after a smoke. Being smokers, we know how it feels) Anyway he switched to the nicotine gum kind of alternative. Things went well for quite a few weeks and he even managed to sit with us over drinks when we smoked and he didn't. He even progressed enough to start talking about the drawbacks of smoking and how we should quit. Needless to say he was respectfully ignored.
One fine day, he rushed to me, visibly upset and begged me for an urgent cigarette. He had developed an addiction to the nicotine gum and that day he had ran out of stock!
