Which values can get <servlet-name> element?

I though that the only values that <servlet-name> can use were servlet's logical name.
But I saw * as well.

The case I found was under <filter-mapping>

By example:



Is there a difference under <servlet>?

Yes, it is permissible for filter mappings. The servlet specification specifically talks about that case.
