customize log4j database logger

I am very new to the log4j package. Does anyone know how to customize the log4j property so that I can have additional columns in my log table and pass in values from my Java code? Is there any documentation out there on this?
log4j.appender.A1.sql=INSERT INTO LOG (Date, Logger, Priority, Message) VALUES ('%d', '%c', '%p', '%m')
this is the default in the examples I've seen but I really need to customize this.
Any help is greatly apprecited
